Skype MIAM

If you want to make a family court application you will most likely need a certificate to show that you’ve had a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). MIAMs can only be conducted by specially accredited family mediators.

Maybe you want a MIAM but can’t find a local mediator who can meet with you soon enough. Or you can’t afford to take time off work to visit the mediator. Well, you can meet with us over Skype video call. All you need is a computer, tablet or smartphone with a webcam, a reliable internet connection and somewhere private to take the video call.

How to get started?

You are welcome to call us on 01670 528441 for a confidential chat. Or to speed things up, you can fill in our referral form and email this to us at info@familymediation-northeast.com. This referral form provides us with important contact information about yourself and the other party and your problem or dispute. Once we have it we’ll get in touch with you to arrange your online appointment and send you instructions explaining how to prepare.

What happens at a MIAM?

At our appointment time, you’ll need to be in front of your computer or mobile device and logged into your Skype account. One of our mediators will video call you. We will give you lots of information about mediation and your other potential options and will ask you some questions so we can work out together whether mediation is suitable for you. Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process. There is no pressure on you to proceed if you don’t wish to.

How much does it cost?

Each MIAM costs £120. Inclusive VAT and no hidden extras. So it includes an initial confidential phone chat you might have with one of our accredited mediators, your online appointment and any follow up letters, emails and phone calls with you (and the other person). And of course it includes your court certificate should you want one. Legal Aid is available for SKYPE MIAMs but only in exceptional circumstances.

What happens next?

If you decide you would like to try mediation, if we haven’t already done at your request we will get in touch with the other person, inviting them to attend a similar meeting. If you are both willing and mediation is suitable we would organise a first mediation session for you both. If you decide you don’t want to mediate or the other party doesn’t wish to attend, we’ll post you the court certificate immediately to enable you to make a court application.
